Little turkey!

Okay, this picture made me laugh so hard! A friend took it while J was over there, I had no idea. What a fun surprise!

A Thousand Splendid Suns

This was a very "heavy" read. Don't read it if you're in the mood for a real "pick me up!" But I still found it fascinating. It basically follows the stories of two women during the past 30 years in Afghanistan. I was worried because I am admittedly very ignorant of middle eastern culture, and wasn't sure I would be able to really follow it. However, I was delighted by how intensely "real" the characters were and I kept thinking how alike we are as humans, regardless of background, culture and religion. If it were a movie it would probably be given at least a PG-13 for some graphic violence and a little sexuality. However, I didn't feel as though it was distasteful. I felt the author was providing us with the details of what it really was like to be a woman in Afghanistan during the different oppressive regimes.
Overall, I really liked it. I've put The Kite Runner, on hold at the library which was Hosseini's first novel, and I'm really interested to read it.

I am a Mother

A quick easy read. Jane Clayson Johnson left her life at the Early Show to be a mom. Great perspective on how the role of "mother" has been degraded in our time. It made me realize that maybe I'm not the only one who often thinks this is one of the hardest jobs in the world!

First Snow!

Today we had our first snow of the season. It's been a wonderfully warm fall with temps in the 60's and 70's until last week. I must admit that I have really enjoyed that!

Jackson and I both had a nap today. So needed. When we woke up, we could see snow falling out our window! So we got to break out all of his winter things for the first time this year. He was way excited to wear his new boots.

The first snow is always fun, but I must admit a little fear came into my heart as I thought of the many long cold winter days ahead. I need to move to Arizona. Or Texas. Or Hawaii. I'll let you know....

Here's Jackson in front of our huge Santa. Fa la la la la!

Potty training saga continued.....

After about 3 weeks of talking about and showing Jackson the toy helicopter he would receive if he went #2 on the toilet, he did it! It took a lot of poo experimentations in all the WRONG places, but finally he GETS IT! Hopefully he will keep continuing to get it. We have more toy cars to get him through the next 6 or so times, so we will see how it goes.
Just had to share the GREAT news, and that I'm a big believer in bribery. (Never thought I'd say that!)
Here's Jackson showing us his new toy.
Congrats Jackson! You did it!

Why the heck not?

So today is Tuesday. J goes to "see-cool" (preschool swap) for 2 blessed hours. I had my list of chores, cleaning I was going to get knocked out. But truthfully, I was exchausted. Instead, I took a 10 am nap! I barely woke up in time to pick him up. My house isn't clean, but I feel GREAT! If you have the chance, I recommend 10am as a great nap time.

The BEST syrup ever

This syrup is to die for. Even if you're not much of a pancake or waffle type person, you will want to drink this straight out of the pan. You HAVE to try this.
Aunt Jemima is going out of business with this one:

The best syrup ever:

1 cup sugar
1/2 stick real butter
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. karo syrup
1 tsp. vanilla

I didn't have any instructions with mine, but here's what I did:
dump all the ingredients in a sauce pan, heat over medium heat. I took it off, right as it started to boil. Also, I couldn't find buttermilk at the store- I used milk and then I had some heavy cream in the fridge, so I added some of that to thicken it a bit. I bet plain milk would be fine too. Enjoy!

Jackson with his cousins at a work party for Uncle Alex at Omniture. It was like a mini trip to disneyland! The kids had so much fun!

Memory Lane

Well, since we got rid of our old slow crappy computer and transferred all our pics onto our sweet new Mac of a computer, we have been traveling down memory lane a bit.
And since my camera is currently holding pictures of halloween and our recent happenings, but is unfortunately hanging on our hooks upstairs, and our sweet new computer is located downstairs, I won't be showing you any pictures of anything recent.

So here's some cute pictures of Jackson back in the day.

Poor little guy was on antibiotics and they couldn't find anymore veins except in his head. His daddy was especially unhappy about that.

This was his first smile, no joke! He started smiling at me and I remember running for the camera. :)

Oh I can't wait for the smell of new baby, and for more pictures of daddy and baby sleeping. (And maybe some sleep in there for me too!)

Christmastime and spanks

Today I got almost all my Christmas shopping done! I just have grandparents and Kirtis left. So that is a big relief! Just 6 more weeks until our little Christmas baby comes! Yeah! I am getting so excited for the holidays, I keep thinking about all the food we are going to eat and what treats I am going to make this year! I can't wait!

Also, this is funny-
I was pouring a cup of juice for Jackson and the cup tipped over and spilled all over the counter and dripped onto the floor. As I'm cleaning it up, Jackson comes to me and says, "No mommy! Don't spill the juice!" Then, he starts SPANKING me! He keeps saying "No mommy, you don't spill the juice, okay!"

I was laughing so hard.

He went through a phase a few months ago when he would always take full cups of juice and milk and intentionally dump them onto the carpet. I guess we reprimanded him pretty badly for it, but at least he doesn't do it anymore! Hopefully he turns out okay and is not too damaged by our "winging it" parenting methods.

Hey moms, what has worked in getting your child to poop on the toilet? I am ready to be done with all of this! We've tried incentives, toys, candy, etc, but its not doing the trick, any ideas?

Funny things. By Jackson

Ooh. This is dewicious! (referring to Reeses cups)

I just like how he says Howdaween. I guess you have to hear it in person.

Book Review: The Memory Keeper's Daughter

I finished this book Halloween night, with the constant interruption of vampires, and transformers knocking at the door!

This was a great book. I enjoyed the fact that it was a little more "heavy" and "literary" than previous books. Towards the mid-end it was slow in parts, but I appreciated the fact that she took the time to truly craft and create her characters, expressing how no one is exempt from struggle and pain. I also enjoyed seeing the "ripple" effect of how one person's bad choice affected so many others. However, this book ends very hopefully showing that by the choices we make, we can either be redeemed in the end, or we can take our pain and guilt with us to the grave and never find peace.
Kim Edwards has also written a collection of stories called the secrets of a fire king. Has anyone read this? I think I will put it on my list to read.
