Spring in Virginia

Spring has ALWAYS been my favorite season, but since living in Virginia, I love it more than ever. I become obsessed with all the blossoming trees, and every time a different type is in bloom, I tell myself we just HAVE to have one of those for our yard.
When I drive around, I sometimes find my eyes wandering from the road because I am looking at someone's landscaping, or noticing the brilliant redbuds or dogwoods in bloom! Dangerous!

I absolutely adore bulbs. Last fall, I planted daffodils, tulips and hyacinth. The hyacinth are SO pretty- and so fragrant- I had no idea!) and I want MORE for next year.
I know the weather is iffy- sometimes it's freezing, sometimes gorgeous, and we've gotten a lot of rainy days (especially this year). The rain is coming down now. But I love it, even with all it's unpredictability. Something about the looking forward to new life coming just gives me so much hope and joy.  Every flower seems to be a miracle of God's love, and is a reminder to me that after hard things, comes a period of growth.

Jackson and Avery hitching a ride with the trees when we planted a few weeks ago. I'm so glad they are getting so much rain! Hopefully they will live!!

Jackson's Bday Party

Here's what I forgot to post!
I'm so scatterbrained!

Jackson party was F-UN. We kept the invite list SMALL so I could handle the stress. :) He wanted a dress up party, then we watched How to train a dragon and had a nerf war.

Some of the first arrivals got their pics taken.
Watching the movie with friends. Emily F and Sophia from school.

Very happy boy!!

Conference Donuts

We had an awesome conference weekend. We decided to renew our tradition of making donuts on conference Sunday. We did it a couple times when we were just barely married, then quit because it was so much work. Now that we have kids- it is way more fun! They were excited and helped us cut out all the donuts and then Kirtis fried all the dough like a pro!
The process did take ALL day. We didn't have donuts until about 1:00- but they were yummy! Can't wait to do it again in six months!

After donuts, we headed to DC to enjoy the cherry blossoms. It was beautiful and relaxing and the kids LOVED it.

Thoughts on Mothering and Childhood

I still have pictures to catch up on, but something has been on my mind! I've been thinking a lot about motherhood and how much I love the role of nurturing my kids and helping them to have the best childhood I can give them.

Saturday was such a great day. We got up early for Jackson's soccer game, stopped off at Lowe's to do a free "Build and Grow" project, then came home for Saturday morning (turned into lunch!) pancakes. The kids just love these traditions and we couldn't have a Saturday without Dad's DELICIOUS pancakes.

That afternoon it was still a little cool, but it wasn't raining. We decided to go out and finish planting the cherry trees, flowering pear trees, and forsythia we had bought a few weeks ago. ( I mostly stood around watching Kirtis doing all the digging!)
Meanwhile, the kids ran around the yard playing hide and go seek, and pretending to be pirates on their playground. Something about the day just felt so perfect. The kids running around happily just being little kids, and I can't describe it other than it was just pure joy.
I love that they were out in the fresh air, running around, using their imaginations. No funky toys or electronics involved!

I just have felt so much satisfaction in being a mom and being with my family. It makes me want marriage and family life for everyone-so they can feel that way too. I know I am in the minority in a world where kids are sometimes looked at as burdens or roadblocks in marriages, careers and personal happiness, but I think it is just the opposite. I think that being a mom to my kids is the most rewarding and important thing I've ever done.
And to add to my joy is that we have another sweet little one coming to our family!

I love the blogging world- because I get to read about so many other moms who feel the way I do about being a mother- that it is a privilege and a joy. I especially love to read Clover Lane- she does all she can to keep her life simple and ALWAYS puts her family above everything else. Such an awesome example.

I have to admit, that I didn't immediately feel the role of mom as super rewarding. It was WAY harder than I thought, and when I just had Jackson as a toddler it seemed many days the challenges outweighed the rewards. Some days I felt so defeated and wondered what the heck I was doing!  But I feel like I've grown a lot as a mom through the years (okay 6 years!) and I'm able to look past the little pains of the days and see the bigger picture more. I definitely enjoy all the little moments more. Like the funny things they say. And the way Jackson spells words like "sumareen" (submarine). The awesome rockets and ships and seamonsters they create out of legos and blocks. The kisses they blow. And the hugs that they "throw." I think I now really understand how quickly all the time passes and I want to enjoy my kids as much as I can while they are small.

Lunch at Jackson's school

On Jackson's birthday we could bring cupcakes in at lunch time.
This picture is a weird one of me- but it shows the craziness of lunch with kindergarteners. My mother in law Kristi could hardly handle it. The noise! The germs!
Avery was pretty overwhelmed by the whole experience too!
Jackson was pleased as punch!
Jackson's buddy Luka.  Avery's eyes make me laugh. This is how she looks when she's had enough.

Because Jackson was also "Star of the week" I got to go in and read his favorite book to his class. He had a hard time picking a favorite book. I steered him toward this book because he loves fish so much and I thought his class would enjoy all the pop-up pictures.
It was tons of fun- and I wish I could have more experiences like this one with his class.
Avery loved getting to sit on her very own carpet square- and did NOT want to leave the school. I had to take her kicking and screaming. She still has TWO more years at home. But I'm glad. :)
All in all- Jackson had so much fun at school celebrating his birthday. That's what it's all about!

More ballet pics

I finally got the pictures off my camera from the last couple of weeks. 143 pictures! Holy moly. I love it though because it means spring is here! There always seems to be so much more to blog about in the spring!

The last pictures were from mom's camera- here's a few more from mine. Daddy and both grammas were able to come to her performance! Such a lucky girl. :)
